Overview

Jason Fox entered his senior season as one of the more underrated, but most accomplished, left tackles in the nation. He played most of the season with a nagging knee injury and missed the bowl game after having surgery. He started 11 games as a senior at LT, grading out at a solid 96%. He allowed only 1 sack in 2009. As a junior, he started 12 of 13 games at LT, grading out at 97% and not allowing a sack. In 2007, as a sophomore, he started all 12 games at LT, grading out at 96% and allowing just a single sack. He started 12 games as a true freshman in 2006, playing both RT and LT. He graded out at 83%, but did not allow a single sack. Fox was named first team All-ACC for his efforts in 2009. He was a highly regarded offensive lineman and tight end in HS.

Strengths

Before his injury, Fox showed that he possesses the athleticism and footwork necessary to play LT in the NFL. He sets up quickly from the snap and shows good balance. He mirrors the defender well in pass defense and has the quick feet and length to handle the speedy edge rushers. Uses his hands and long arms well to control defenders. Should excel in a zone blocking scheme. Has the agility to get to the second level and is effective blocking in space. Intelligent player with solid experience in the ACC. Tough, team-first player who has played through injuries.

Weaknesses

Fox's main weakness is his lack of strength at the point of attack. He's a former TE who still needs to add functional strength. As such, he suffers as a run blocker. He doesn't provide much pop or punch initially and will get too high, allowing defenders to get under his pads and drive him backwards into the pocket. Injuries are now a concern with the knee surgery in December. More of a finesse player and doesn't have the physicality or nasty streak that many like in their offensive linemen.

Projection

Jason Fox has to show teams that he'll recover nicely from knee surgery and still have the agility that he possessed prior to the injury. Teams employing a ZBS should be interested in Fox and Washington is likely hoping that he'll fall to them with their pick at the beginning of the 4th. He could hear his name as early as the late 2nd round of the 2010 NFL Draft if teams feel he can fully recover from his injury.
