OverviewThe leader of the Spartan's Defense, Jones is a three year starter who has improved every year and lead the team in tackles each of the last two seasons.
As a sophomore, Jones tallied 127 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 3 passes broken up in coverage. He was even more impressive as a junior with 141 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, and a forced fumble. Jones has averaged 9.1 tackles per game from his middle linebacker position. StrengthsJones has a skill set that is a bit reminiscent of Derrick Brooks when he was leaving FSU, though not quite as freakishly quick. Jones has a very high motor and makes plays all over the field. In on nearly every play, Jones roams pre-snap, probing the offense for weaknesses and is versatile enough to play either 4-3 WLB or 3-4 ILB and even 'Mike' in a Tampa 2 base defense.
WeaknessesCan he play MLB in most 4-3 defenses, can he hold 240+ pounds? We don't know, these are not overwhelming concerns but they are legitimate.
ProjectionWhether he'll be in East Lansing to try to continue to improve is still to be decided.
Jones' father told the Detroit News that it looks like his son will return to the Spartans next season, but the junior will sit down with his family next week and come to a decision on his football future. If he declares I don't see how he stays on the board past the 15-20 range of the 2nd could and could go earlier. |
