OverviewJon is a 2006 graduate of Rich East High School in Park Forest, IL where he was named a PrepStar All-Midwest Region and a Chicago Tribune Special Mention All State. He was also named a Chicago Sun-Times All-State selection and a 2-time The Star All-Area performer. The Daily Southtown All-Area team also tabbed him, as did the Northwest Indiana Times All-Area team. Jon was also a 2-time Academic All-State pick, and his offense gained over 3,100 rushing yards his senior year. He also earned three letters in basketball.
At Illinois as a true freshman in 2006, Jon played in 6 games. In 2007 he started at right guard in all 13 games and was in on 991 offensive plays, including 80 knockdowns. Jon assisted in Illinois' 445 yards of total offense against USC's fourth-ranked defense in the Rose Bow. In 2008, he was part of an offensive line that has helped the Illini rank first in the Big Ten in total offense (448.3) and pass offense (274.5) and second in scoring offense (30.4) through 11 games. As a senior this past season, Jon was named second-team All-Big Ten by both coaches and media and helped the Illinois rushing offense rank 25th in the NCAA and third in the Big Ten. StrengthsKeeps arms extended and holds his blocks in pass pro. Keeps proper form and a wide base in pass pro. Has strong arms and can steer the rusher. Aware of developing threats and slides smoothly to them. Will hit two. Shuffles and mirrors well. Decent run blocker as well. Overall solid technique. Has played at a high level for three seasons in one of the nation's most demanding conferences, and is well-seasoned, having started 36 straight games at ROG.
WeaknessesDoesn't always keep his feet churning as a run blocker and sometimes relies too much on his upper body to get the job done when the legs need to be involved. Doesn't always hunt a second hit after the first threat is eliminated. Can get on the second level, but is inconsistent in what he accomplishes there. He will bury his man on one play and only make partial contact on the next. Doesn't always win the initial collision, but he usually gets it together and then drives the man back. Above average feet, but not elite feet.
Projection2nd-3rd round.
