OverviewPowerful, fast back who led the nation in rushing in 2009 with 1808 yards and 19 TDs with 6.6 yards per carry. An AP 2nd Team All-American and 1st All-WAC performer. Led the nation in rushing out of high school as quarterback when recruited. Team leader who has persevered through injuries.
StrengthsRuns hard with speed and power. Has ability to shift to next gear in the hole and separate himself from would-be tacklers. In traffic, will lower shoulder and drive over defenders. Never ran for less than 100 yards per game in '09 with an impressive 6.6 yards per carry. Plays with 'chip on shoulder.'
WeaknessesHad some injury issues earlier in career. Concern about level of competition, but Matthews ran for 100+ yards against Wisconsin and Illinios and 234 yards on 19 carries against Boise State.
Projection2nd to early 3rd round. Depending on performance relative to other top RBs (Spiller, Best, and Dwyer) at combine, may rise higher.

Date/Time: 01/19/2010 - 2:25PM CST Predicted Round: Round 2 Mathews is a big play guy who is very aggressive in pass pro. He is not a pounder. In that regard, he reminds me a lot of Chris "Beanie" Wells, except he is so much better in pass pro and as a receiver. For that reason, I give him a 2nd round grade. And the fact, he is explosive. User: threecubed Date/Time: 12/20/2009 - 9:16AM CST Predicted Round: Round 4 decent bowl game , not great . looks like a 2nd day guy but then RBs get undervalued unless they run fast .
