Overview

Joey is a 2005 graduate of Harrison High School in Evansville, IN where he ranked, coming out, as the 18th best pro-style quarterback in the nation and the 5th best player overall in Indiana by Rivals.com. He was also the No. 34 overall prospect in the Midwest as declared by Prep Football Report, and was honored as a first team all-state as a senior. Joey completed 233 of 411 passes (56.7 percent) for 2,899 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior and went 222 of 398 passes (55.8 percent) for 2,689 yards and 28 touchdowns his junior year. He led his high school team to 11 come-from-behind victories as a prep star.

At Purdue, he redshirted in 2005, saw action in three games behind Curtis Painter in 2006, was named Academic All-Big Ten and appeared in four games as backup to Painter in 2007, completing 13 of 24 passes (54.2 percent) for 147 yards with one touchdown and one interception. In 2008, Joey Received the Boilermaker's Most Improved Award-Offense for spring practices, and was again named Academic All-Big Ten. He appeared in three games as backup before being injured for the year (knee) and completed 8 of 15 passes (53.3 percent) for 81 yards. He also recorded seven carries for 13 yards (1.9 average) and scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 2-yard rush against Northern Colorado on Sept. 6 2009, has been Joey's year, and he has really emerged to show that he was good enough to start for most Big 10 squads all along.

Strengths

He's not this, and he's not that, but he plays the game with intelligence, and has really maximized his one year as a starter to show that he has the smarts and the basic tools to force his way onto an NFL roster as a #3 QB who won't hurt you. Coach's son who is a real student of the game. Team player who waited his turn without complaining. Makes the right calls, reads and progressions. Does not force the ball. Is definitely a coach on the field at the college level. Ryan Fitzpatrick-like in smarts/football intelligence. COuld handle an NFL playbook with ease, and may translate well to a variety of systems. Solid technique, delivery and footwork.

Weaknesses

Not physically imposing. Possesses a good arm, but not the big rocket. Slightly over-aged. Is not going to run away from pressure all that well at the next level. One-year wonder who has non-football options. Has maxed, and is not likely to ever get any better or bigger physically.

Projection

7th-priority UDFA.
