Overview

Strengths

Very productive WR in 2005 who never really got it going again after that. Very strong skill set for jump ball situations. Great size. Faster than he looks and gets to the spot first. Adapts well on the fly. Would have been even more of a standout in an even better passing offense. Endzone finder. Solid hands. Has Joe Jervicius-type possession receiver abilities. Fighter and competitior.

Weaknesses

Not a real blazer. Built up speed. Best routes are go routes and simple crosses. Double moves and quick-cuts are not his forte. Got lost in the shuffle when Iowa State struggled the past two seasons. Needs to get even better as a blocker.

Projection

6-7th round.

Interview with Todd Blythe

Interviewed on: Tuesday, July 18th, 2006
Steve Martin: Hello.
Todd Blythe: Hello, this is Todd Blythe.
SM: I am really, really pleased to hear back from you so soon, Todd. I am a big fan of your game.
TB: Thank you.
SM: Can we start by having you give me an accurate height and weight?
TB: I am six foot five and one-half, and I just weighed myself and I was 211.
SM: What's a accurate forty time for you, Todd?
TB: 4.53. I ran that on field turf last spring.
SM: Who timed you, the coaches or the NFL scouts?
TB: The coaches. We have a policy here at Iowa State that only graduating seniors run for the NFL scouts.
SM: Do you know how many reps you can do at 225?
TB: No, I really don't. We don't work that way.

How many wr's coming into this draft can say they have 31 career td's, played in 44 games, had over 3,000 career receiving yards, averaged 14, 15, 19 and 20 yards per catch in four seasons for a career avg of 17 plus with over 180 grabs and is 6'5" with 4.51 speed? Matt Jones was first round pick by Jacksonville 3 years ago with similar size and NO credentials. Worst case Blythe could be a Kelly Washington/Sam Aiken type special team gunner who offers size at wr in the redzone offense. Best case he can project to is a Drew Bennett type productive wr. I'd certainly take a flyer on this smart productive gamer in the 7th round or even 6th
