Stats

Overview

Erik Ainge came into college with a lot of acclaim. The nephew of Danny Ainge of Boston Celtic fame, Erik brought lofty expectations with him. A torn meniscus kept him out of spring practice 2007.

As a true freshman, he started six games and put up some impressive stats. As a sophomore in 2005, he struggled mightily and ended up in a rotation with Rick Clausen. In 2006, everything seems to have clicked for him and he had a very good season. He is beginning to draw comparisons to another famous Vol QB named Peyton.

Strengths

Ainge has outstanding size at nearly 6'6" and the frame to add a bit more muscle to stand up to an NFL blitz. He has a strong, yet accurate arm. Ainge is able to find open receivers and makes good decisions.

Weaknesses

Consistency. It's hard to say what caused his meltdown in 2005, but it became a mental thing. Is he able to overcome adversity or will he revert to the bad QB of the past. He needs some more experience to show he's matured. Ainge also benefitted from outstanding blocking in 2006 and wasn't forced into bad situations.

Projection

Ainge has all the physical skills one would want in an NFL QB, but just hasn't been able to put things together at UT. Look for him to be drafted anywhere in the late third to early fifth rounds. He could be a better NFL QB than a college QB in time.

Predicted Round: Undrafted

Has the intangables to be a very productive QB in the NFL. However, he has durability issues. Show me you can remain heathly. No matter where he falls in the draft, I expect QB Erik Ainge to enjoy a good career in the NFL. If he remains heathly then he is a much better prospect than Matt Ryan, Dennis Dixon, Brian Brohm, John David Booty, and Colt Brennan. QB Erik Ainge should be a top 10 prospect in the draft. He has a great arm and is pretty accurate. Durability is a concern.

Under the radar thanks to his 05 meltdown and knee issues, but he's got an accurate, live arm and a great release. Compares to Derek Anderson if he's given DA's solid OL and good weapons.

Probably the last 1st day QB taken. Has all the physocal make up of a top tier QB with great speed, arm strength. His lack of consistency and confidence leave more to be desired. Plagued a little by injuries. Still with all those physical tools, someone will think they can groom him.
