Using my Crystal Ball - Predicting the NFL in 2010

Posted by cjs206, Sep 9 2010, 9:20:00 AM

Given that the NFL season starts tonight I've decided to take a quick break from posting my way-too-early 2011 draft team needs features to make my predictions (guesses) as to what might happen in the NFL this coming year.

Like many others, its going to be based mainly on my feelings and gut instinct and has just as much chance of being terribly wrong as it does or being right. However, since everyone seems to like doing this, I guessed I should too so here goes.

AFC North
With the Steelers missing Ben Roethlisberger for the first 4 games this gives the other teams in this division a chance to gain the initiative early on. By the time Big Ben comes back, it may already be too late to prevent someone else taking this division.
CJ's Take - Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Browns

AFC South
Yet again this division is going to be about the Colts and whether anyone can stop them. Vince Young needs to prove he's got what it takes to win consistently while the Texans will be looking to make the playoffs for the first time in their history.
CJ's Take - Colts, Texans, Titans, Jaguars

AFC East
While the Jets may be the boldest and brashest team in the NFL, Tom Brady's Patriots are still the team to beat. That said, I'm not sure the talent in New England is entirely what it used to be so we could see a changing of the guard.
CJ's Take - Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, Bills

AFC West
While the Chargers still look like the class of the division, the Raiders and Chiefs have both made nice moves in this offseason and both have potential to be surprise packages. Denver may surprise too, but not in a good way.
CJ's Take - Chargers, Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos

NFC North
Most people seem to be handing the Packers this division and while I can see why, a certain Brett Favre makes me think differently. This division may have the best set of QB's with Jay Cutler and Matt Stafford making up the numbers - both are excellent leaders and could take their teams far.
CJ's Take - Vikings, Packers, Bears, Lions

NFC South
The reigning champion Saints will be a tough nut to crack but only the Bucs look worthy of being written off this early. The Falcons have key men healthy again and the Panthers could cause a few surprises this year too.
CJ's Take - Saints, Falcons, Panthers, Buccaneers

NFC East
This is possibly the most difficult division to predict since its possible to make a case for all 4 teams. Lots of people are hyping up the Cowboys while the Giants are probably enjoying getting on with things in the shadows of their city neighbours. Kevin Kolb could be the key to this division.
CJ's Take - Eagles, Giants, Cowboys, Redskins

NFC West
The fact that Derek Anderson is a starting QB in this division says enough really. I don't really see any of these sides as contenders this year, except for the #1 overall pick in the 2011 draft! Only the 49ers would have any real chance in any other division.
CJ's Take - 49ers, Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks

AFC Wildcards - Bengals, Texans
NFC Wildcards - Falcons, Packers

AFC Champion - Ravens
NFC Champion - Vikings

Superbowl Winners - Baltimore Ravens

So there you have it - I've picked the Saints to win the NFC South again (and boy does that hurt!) but repeating would be a step too far for them. The Ravens have a very good young QB, a good running game, some elite receivers and a solid offensive line. Throw in their defense for good measure and there you have it - the recipe for a Super Bowl.
