2009 Mock Draft - Round 1

Go to Round:
PICK #1 The Lions Pick:
Michael Johnson
(DE, Georgia Tech)
It will be interesting to see if the Lions reach for a QB. As none are really worth the #1 pick, it is unlikely that Detroit keeps this pick, but if they do, getting a pass rushing phenom like Johnson makes sense.
PICK #2 The Rams Pick:
Andre Smith
(OT, Alabama)
Alex Barron has not been the answer and Orlando Pace is at the end of his long and illustrious career. Bringing in a young road grader like Smith gives a lift to the offense as a whole and helps keep the RBs healthy.
PICK #3 The Bengals Pick:
Rey Maualuga
(LB, USC)
The Bengals need to get nasty down the middle on defense, and even though this is a tad high for a guy who has trouble diagnosing, Maualuga can bring that nastiness to the Bengals.
PICK #4 The Texans Pick:
Michael Crabtree
(WR, Texas Tech)
Not necessarily a position of need, but too great a talent to pass over. The Texans suddenly become an offensive powerhouse.
PICK #5 The Chiefs Pick:
Malcolm Jenkins
(CB, Ohio State)
Malcolm Jenkins is the surest thing there is to a "can't miss" shut down corner in this draft, and the Chiefs need to stop the bleeding in the secondary with a guy they can groom as the leader of the deep patrol.
PICK #6 The Browns Pick:
Terrence Cody
(NT, Alabama)
Bringing in the immovable force that Terrence Cody represents gives Cleveland a run stuffer that can free up their LBs for the next 10 years.
PICK #7 The Raiders Pick:
Jeremy Maclin
(WR, Missouri)
The Raiders always draft speed, and with the QB situation calming down, new targets are needed. Another KR specialist that can score a TD or 2 a month, could also help boost the W-L record by at least 2-3 games.
PICK #8 The Seahawks Pick:
Knowshon Moreno
(HB, Georgia)
The Seahawks must bring youth and talent to their running game sooner rather than later and are ecstatic that Moreno--the undoubted shiftiest and most talented back in the draft--falls into their laps.
PICK #9 The 49ers Pick:
George Selvie
(DE, South Florida)
The offense is doing OK, now its time to add a speed-rushing demon to start bringing the defense up to par.
PICK #10 The Vikings Pick:
Matt Stafford
(QB, Georgia)
The Tarvaris Jackson experiment just hasn't worked out, and Ferrotte is no long term answer. Matt Stafford is the most-highly regarded, and seemingly pro-ready QB in the draft.
PICK #11 The Saints Pick:
Aaron Curry
(LB, Wake Forest)
Curry is the best defensive talent on the board, and if there is anything the Saints need it is some swagger on defense.
PICK #12 The Eagles Pick:
Eugene Monroe
(OT, Virginia)
Since Winston Justice has been a disappointment, and neither of the starting OTs has shown that they have a whole lot left in the tank, the Eagles are ecstatic to see a player of Monroe's caliber still on the board.
PICK #13 The Chargers Pick:
Brian Cushing
(LB, USC)
The Chargers simply must add insurance at OLB with the issues they have with a certain player currently. Brian Cushing is not as dynamic, but he fills an important insurance need.
PICK #14 The Jaguars Pick:
Vontae Davis
(CB, Illinois)
The Jags need to firm up their CB coverage, and Davis is the best of the rest and a decent value pick at this slot.
PICK #15 The Packers Pick:
Taylor Mays
(S, USC)
Mays has the potential to be one of the league's great enforcers, and Green Bay wants to become know as the enforcers of the Black & Blue division.
PICK #16 The Jets Pick:
William Moore
(S, Missouri)
The Jets wanted Davis or Mays, but are happy enough to continue the run on DBs with a solid, pro-bowl type safety who can punish the oppositions wide receivers.
PICK #17 The Ravens Pick:
Michael Oher
(OT, Mississippi)
The Ravens need to address the LOT position for the longterm health of their signal callers, and Oher is great value at this spot in the first round.
PICK #18 The Dolphins Pick:
B.J. Raji
(NT, Boston College)
Dolphins would have preferred one of the elite DBs, but settle for a 10-year prom bowl nose guard who can be the rock of this defense.
PICK #19 The Colts Pick:
Chris Wells
(HB, Ohio State)
The Colts running game has been in flux the past couple of years, and they are ecstatic to get Beanie at #19 and insert him right into their weaponry arsenal.
PICK #20 The Falcons Pick:
Jermaine Gresham
(TE, Oklahoma)
A young TE stud like Jermaine Gresham gives young Matt Ryan a final, safe check down when going through his progressions, and a solid blocker to make him even more comfortable in the pocket.
PICK #21 The Buccaneers Pick:
Percy Harvin
(WR, Florida)
When ancient pass catchers like Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard are still being called upon to make plays on a regular basis, bringing in a flyer who can do so many things gives the Bucs a Reggie Bush of their own and takes some of the pressure off those old legs.
PICK #22 The Bears Pick:
Sam Bradford
(QB, Oklahoma)
Despite Kyle Orton's progress, the Bears pull the shocker of the first round by grabbing a QB. Bradford is simply too great a talent to pass on, even if they wind up trading him...
PICK #23 The Cardinals Pick:
Brian Orakpo
(DE, Texas)
The Cards simply must upgrade their pass rush, and they role the dice that Orakpo's injury concerns are behind him and that he will indeed become that "better pro than college player" that so many feel he can be.
PICK #24 The Patriots Pick:
Victor Harris
(CB, Virginia Tech)
The Pats continue to struggle to find that big, rugged corner since Ty Law departed years ago. All the stop gap measures have never really panned out, and Harris has the position versatility and nastiness in run support that Belichick craves.
PICK #25 The Eagles Pick:
Josh Freeman
(QB, Kansas State)
This pick goes to the Eagles from the Panthers in the Jeff Otah trade last year. With McNabb growing a bit long in the tooth, the Eagles select his style guy for Donovan to train up and to leave as his legacy.
PICK #26 The Bills Pick:
Darrius Heyward-Bey
(WR, Maryland)
The Bills bring in another instant star who will give the rest of the AFC fits when combined with Buffalo's growing stable of legit aerial threats.
PICK #27 The Broncos Pick:
Mark Herzlich
(LB, Boston College)
Mark Herzlich is a great talent who can solidify the Broncos LB corp and play any spot back there. He brings that big play, game-changing, turnover-producing personality back to Denver.
PICK #28 The Redskins Pick:
Greg Hardy
(DE, Mississippi)
The upstart Skins did trade for Jason Taylor, but he can’t play forever so DE is a need and despite Hardy's issues, they reach slightly for a guy that has the potential to pay off BIG.
PICK #29 The Steelers Pick:
Jamon Meredith
(OT, South Carolina)
The Steelers need to stop attempting half measures with their offensive line, and Meredith provides an instant upgrade to an otherwise solid offensive unit.
PICK #30 The Lions Pick:
Duke Robinson
(OG, Oklahoma)
The Lions need to finally get a replacement at guard that can do what Damien Woody did--i.e. give the running game some real push.
PICK #31 The Titans Pick:
Alphonso Smith
(CB, Wake Forest)
Smith is a playmaker and a ballhawk. Just the type of gamechanger in the secondary that the Titans had always hoped Pac Man could become.
PICK #32 The Giants Pick:
Brandon Pettigrew
(TE, Oklahoma State)
The Giants love that big pass catcher, and even though TE is not a position of need, they are free to go BPA at the tail end of round one.
