OverviewMorgan Burnett was named second team All-ACC in 2009 after leading the team in picks (4) and finishing second in tackles. In 2008 he was a first team All-American (PFW) and first team All-ACC after leading the nation with 7 picks and leading the team with 93 tackles. As a true freshman in 2007, he started only 1 game, but was still 5th on the team in tackles and led the team with 3 picks.
StrengthsBurnett is a ballhawk at the rover position. In only three years (2 as a starter), he has 14 picks. In the secondary, Burnett is very aware of the action and makes good decisions. He has an excellent see-to-do reaction and can get a good jump on the ball. He has good timing and anticipation, and generally comes down with the ball in a joust. Despite this, he's not just a centerfielder. He's equally dangerous inside the box. He's an accomplished blitzer who can get to the QB. He'll also shoot the gaps and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Burnett is a hard hitter and isn't afraid to get his clothes dirty to stop the running game. Burnett has good overall speed and quickness, but he appears even faster on the field because of his ability to diagnose the action quickly. He's athletic and fluid, and doesn't make many mistakes.
WeaknessesBurnett often goes for the knockout hit, but isn't big enough to deliver it, allowing the ball-carrier to bounce off the hit and keep going. He needs to work on his form tackling and wrapping up. Burnett is still inconsistent. He'll have a monster game and then turn around and have a game where he has little impact. He needs to show that he can shed blocks better. Once he's engaged, he usually doesn't make an impact on the play. I would also like to see his gap awareness improve.
ProjectionBurnett could play either safety position in the NFL. Teams may be inclined to look at him at FS because of his ball skills, but he'd be an impact player in the box too. Look for Burnett to go off the board in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Date/Time: 12/16/2009 - 2:48PM CST Predicted Round: Round 2 Morgan Burnett is my contingency plan if the Chiefs can't land Berry at #5. If Earl Thomas(Texas) declairs he is the #2 saftey but no chance he makes it to the second round. Burnett is better than Taylor Mays even though most sites won't tell you that yet. Burnett will be the 3rd saftey off the board and top 10 pick in the second round. Rate This Player |
